Root Canal Treatment
Save a painful, infected tooth instead of losing it
Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside the tooth, cleans and seals the canals, and relieves pain. The tooth is then usually protected with a crown.
Why patients choose it
- Relieves toothache caused by infection
- Keeps your natural tooth
- Usually completed in one to three visits
- Done under local anaesthesia
What to expect
- Examination and X-ray
- Numbing the tooth and cleaning the canals
- Sealing the canals
- Crown to protect the treated tooth
Common questions
Is a root canal painful?
With local anaesthesia most patients feel little more than during a filling. Mild soreness for a few days afterwards is common.
Do I need a crown afterwards?
Back teeth usually do, because a root-treated tooth becomes more brittle. Your dentist will advise.
What is the alternative?
Extraction, followed by a bridge, implant or denture to replace the tooth.
